Keyboard shortcuts (moving from Slack)
Slack's keyboard shortcuts and their Mattermost equivalents — what's identical, and the few that changed.
Coming from Slack? Most of your muscle memory carries over. Below are the common
macOS shortcuts (use Ctrl in place of ⌘ on Windows/Linux). In the app, press
⌘ / anytime to see Mattermost’s full built-in list.
Everyday keys — identical to Slack
| What you want | Slack | Mattermost |
|---|---|---|
| Jump to a channel / DM (quick switch) | ⌘K | ⌘K (channels) · ⌘⇧K (DMs) |
| Previous / next channel | ⌥↑ / ⌥↓ | ⌥↑ / ⌥↓ |
| Previous / next unread channel | ⌥⇧↑ / ⌥⇧↓ | ⌥⇧↑ / ⌥⇧↓ |
| Mentions & reactions | ⌘⇧M | ⌘⇧M |
| Edit your last message | ↑ (empty box) | ↑ (empty box) |
| Bold / italic | ⌘B / ⌘I | ⌘B / ⌘I |
| Show all shortcuts | ⌘/ | ⌘/ |
No relearning for any of the above.
What changed
| What you want | Slack | Mattermost |
|---|---|---|
| Search | ⌘G | ⌘⇧F |
| Mark a channel as read | Esc | hover the channel → ⋯ → Mark as Read |
| Upload a file | drag / ⌘U | ⌘U |
| Open thread / right pane | — | ⌘. |
| React to your last message | — | ⌘⇧\ |
⚠️ Same key, different result — the traps
⌘⇧A— in Slack opens All Unreads; in Mattermost it opens Settings. For unread channels in Mattermost, use⌥⇧↑/⌥⇧↓(or⌘⇧U).- Search moved from
⌘Gto⌘⇧F.
Finding a channel by name
Mattermost’s top search bar searches messages and files, not channel names. To
find a channel by name, use ⌘K (type a few letters) or Browse Channels — see

Prefer the terminal? The Matterhorn keys are on the Terminal client page.
