HTC Vive

The Vive family puts its serial in a genuinely awkward spot, and a full Vive setup is several serialized parts, not one.

Vive Pro, Vive Pro Eye, and Vive Pro 2

The serial is under the blue cable cover on the headset. Disconnect the headset cable, lift the cover, and the label is underneath. It is not visible with the cable attached.

Vive (original)

Check the label on the underside of the headset near the cable entry, and under the face cushion — the cushion pulls straight off. The label carries both the model and the serial.

Link box

The link box (the small breakout box between the headset and the PC) has its own serial on its underside label. Record it with the headset asset — link boxes and headset generations are not interchangeable, and an orphaned link box is useless.

Trackers

Vive Trackers carry a label on the underside, around the ¼-20 mounting thread. Each tracker is its own serial. With eight of them in the lab, log them as individual assets — they’re the items most likely to end up in someone’s bag.

From the PC (Windows only)

SteamVR runs the whole Vive family and can report attached hardware: SteamVR → Menu → Help → Create System Report. The report lists connected devices — headset, base stations, controllers, and trackers — and usually their serials, which is far faster than unplugging four headsets.

There is no macOS, Linux, or FreeBSD path here: SteamVR support for these headsets is Windows-only in practice.

Base stations and controllers

Base stations (Lighthouses) and wands each have a label on the back or underside of the unit. They’re serialized too. If a room’s tracking setup is fixed in place, record the base station serials against the room location rather than checking them in and out.

Model field

Vive, Vive Pro, Vive Pro Eye, Vive Pro 2 — these are four different products and the Pro Eye’s eye tracking is exactly the reason someone borrows it, so don’t collapse them into one model.
